What is Fatherhood?

Always start with the definition of your terms. At least when you want or need clarity. How does one define such a meaningful, old and important concept as Fatherhood? Historically and simply are good places to start.

If you look up the definition of Fatherhood, you will find it is the act of being a Father. Not that helpful. Historically this has meant a biological male sireing a child. There are also cases of fathers “giving their name” to non-biological children indicating what we would call adoption. Fatherhood then can include more than just biological children. More on that later. So what does the act of being a father mean or what is it about?

Fatherhood is the necessary sacrifice needed from men to raise children to become productive and healthy adults. Traditionally, this has meant men provide, protect and disciple. Fathers prepare their children for the world. What sacrifices are needed to meet these roles?

The short answer is self-sacrifice. In other words, denying oneself for a greater cause. In this case, the cause is fatherhood. The long answer is what Fathers throughout time have struggled with. It may be helpful to look at other causes men have sacrificed for.

Military service immediately comes to mind as a cause men sacrificed themselves for. Even if you have not served in the military, most men have an idea what it requires. First, it is a time commitment. It is a full time occupation or at least the training phases are. Second, it is a mental and moral commitment. In the Marine Corps, this is summed up with a saying, Semper Fi, meaning always faithful. Lastly it is a physical commitment. Physical training and testing is a required and regular aspect of military service.

As the example above shows, the commitments require self sacrifice to be fit for service. One is focused on himself in the context of serving the purpose, to be in the best condition for that service, not for self pleasure or gain. This is not only true of Fatherhood, it is also true of manhood and key to being a good husband.

What is the sacrifice necessary for fatherhood? What is its context? Why is it important? Is the sacrifice still worthwhile or even needed in today’s world? We will be covering these topics and many more like it, so stay tuned.
